The New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The New Orleans Pelicans compete in the Western Conference Southwest Division along with San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, and the Dallas Mavericks.
The New Orleans Pelicans play their home games at the Smoothie King Center which opened in 1999. They were originally called the Orleans Hornets and were established in 2002. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 they temporarily relocated to the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, and were known during their two year stay as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. Apart from this temporary move, the Smoothie King Center has been their only home. The arena has a capacity of 16,867 and was once the home to the ECHL’s New Orleans Brass and Arena Football League’s New Orleans VooDoo. It has hosted three NBA All-Star Game; In 2008, 2014 and 2017, and has hosted many wrestling, MMA, boxing and football matches as well as The Professional Bull Riders events.
