The Tampa Bay Rays are a professional baseball team in Major League Baseball (MLB) based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Rays compete in the American League (AL) East division along with the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. Outside their division, the Jays’ main rivals are the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners. The team plays its home games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Tropicana Field opened in 1990 and was originally known as the Florida Suncoast Dome. It has also been known as the ThunderDome and also goes by The Trop. The ballpark is domed, with a capacity of 42,735. Besides the Rays, it has also hosted major events such as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, College Football bowl games and major concerts such as KISS, Billy Joel and Guns N’ Roses.
Tampa Bay is a growing foodie scene but it does have some local treasures that must be eaten when visiting. Tampa is the birthplace of one of the best sandwiches ever made – The Cuban. The best are at the Columbia restaurants, Floridian Cuban Sandwiches or Brocato’s Sandwich Shop. The Stone Crab is a must at Frenchy’s Cafe. Another must have is the Grouper Sandwich at Dockside Dave’s Grill.
