The Oakland Athletics are a professional baseball team in Major League Baseball (MLB) based in Oakland, California. The Athletics or A’s for short compete in the American League (AL) West division along with the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. Their main rivalries outside of their division are with their bay area neighbor, the San Francisco Giants. It is often called the Bay Bridge Series including when they played each other in the 1989 World Series. The team plays its home games at RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland.
RingCentral Coliseum opened in 1966 as Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum and has also been known as Network Associates Coliseum, the Net, McAfee Coliseum, Overstock.com Coliseum and O.co Coliseum. The stadium is open-air and has a capacity of 56,057. Besides the A’s, it also hosts football’s Oakland Raiders, major games for the San Jose Earthquakes soccer club of MLS, major concerts including Green Day, countless (well 66 actually) Grateful Dead Shows and the Rolling Stone’s famous “Live’r Than You’ll Ever Be” recording.
