The San Antonio Spurs are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) based in San Antonio, Texas. The San Antonio Spurs compete in the Western Conference Southwest Division along with New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, and the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs have had rivalries with Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, but their most noteworthy rivalry is with Los Angeles Lakers, which has been considered the best in NBA history. The two teams met in the playoffs five times in six seasons, with one of them reaching the NBA Finals each time.
The San Antonio Spurs play their home matches at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, which opened in 2002. Prior to that they played at the Alamodome from its opening in 1993. Despite the Alamodome being a new arena its primary purpose was as a football stadium and didn’t work well as a basketball arena, therefore it became apparent that they needed to move to a more accommodating home. Before the Alamodome they also played at the HemisFair Arena for 20 years.
The AT&T Center has a capacity of 18,418 and is also home to American Hockey League’s San Antonio Rampage. The arena also hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and has previously hosted the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series event, and the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions. There have also been wrestling and UFC matches held here. Concerts that have been held at the arena include the likes of Iron Maiden, Jonas Brothers, Hugh Jackman, and in 2016 Black Sabbath played their last ever concert here.
