The Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in Toronto, Ontario. The Toronto Maple Leafs compete in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference along with Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, and Ottawa Senators. They have the oldest rivalry in NHL history with the Montreal Canadiens, which dates back to 1917. The rivalry is considered symbolic with the rivalry with the two cities, Toronto and Montreal. They also consider Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, and Detroit Red Wings as rivals.
The Toronto Maple Leafs play their home games at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, which opened in 1999. Prior to this they played their home matches at the Mutual Street Arena from 1917 – 1931, where the team were known by their original name, Toronto Arenas. During their time here they were renamed Toronto St. Patricks in 1919, which then changed to what they’re now known as, The Toronto Maple Leafs, in 1927. In 1931 they moved to the Maple Leaf Gardens which they called home for an astounding 68 years before moving to their current home, the Scotiabank Arena.
The Scotiabank Arena has a capacity of 18,800 and is also home to the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, and the NLL’s Toronto Rock. The arena also hosts occasional games for AHL’s Toronto Marlies, and the NBA G League’s Raptors 905. There have been other sporting events held here including UFC matches, WWE matches, video game competitions, and was the host for the 2017 Invictus Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. Concert goers can enjoy performances from the likes of Thom Yorke, Post Malone, Bon Iver, and Carrie Underwood at the arena.
