The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in New York City. The New York Rangers compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference along with Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and New York Islanders. The New York Rangers are rivals with the New Jersey Devils, which is given the name the Hudson River rivalry because their home arenas are less than ten miles across the Hudson River from one another. The New York Rangers also have a rivalry with the New York Islanders, which is known as the Battle of New York.
The New York Rangers play their home games at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The current Madison Square garden is its fourth iteration but they also called the third iteration their home from 1926 until 1968 when the fourth iteration was opened. Madison Square Garden gets its name from the fourth President of the United States, James Madison. Madison Square Garden has a capacity of 18,006 for its ice hockey games, and is also home to NBA’s the New York Knicks. From 1997 to 2017 it was also home to the WNBA’s New York Liberty. Before boxing primarily moved to Las Vegas the arena was the mecca of professional boxing matches, and has also been used to host pro wrestling matches.
Many superstars have performed at Madison Square Garden over the years and was the last venue John Lennon ever performed at in 1974. Elvis Presley, Led Zepplin, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Madonna are just a selection of many stars that have held a concert here. On October 20, 2001 a benefit concert for the September 11 attacks, The Concert for New York City, was held here.
