The Pittsburgh Penguins are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Penguins compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference along with Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and New York Islanders. The Pittsburgh Penguins have a rivalry with the Philadelphia Flyers, which is known as the Battle of Pennsylvania. They also have a rivalry with the New York Islanders, and most recently have developed one with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Pittsburgh Penguins play their home games at the PPG Paints Arena (originally called the Consol Energy Center) in Pittsburgh, which opened in 2010. Prior to this they called the Civic Arena, which was nicknamed The Igloo, their home for a staggering 43 years. The PPG Paints Arena has a capacity of 18,387 for its ice hockey matches, and was home to the AFL’s Pittsburgh Power from 2011 – 2014. The arena is also used to host school basketball matches for teams from the Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. Concert goers can also catch performances from the likes of Phil Collins, The Black Keys, and The Chainsmokers at the arena.
