The Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Winnipeg Jets compete in the Central Division of the Western Conference along with St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche. The team were originally called the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999, and in 2011 were renamed the Winnipeg Jets. They were named after the original Winnipeg Jets who were relocated in 1996 and have since become the Arizona Coyotes.
The Winnipeg Jets play their home matches at the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, which opened in 2004. Prior to that, when they were known as the Atlanta Thrashers, they played their home matches at the State Farm Arena (originally called the Philips Arena) in Atlanta. The Bell MTS Place has a capacity of 15,321 for its ice hockey matches, and is also home to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The arena has held many sporting events over the years including the Men’s NORCECA Volleyball Championship, BDO Classic Canadian Open of Curling, World Deaf Ice Hockey Championship, and the UFC 161. There are plenty of entertainment events held at the arena including A Conversation with Michelle Obama, Amaluna – Cirque Du Soleil, and concerts from the likes of Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and Celine Dion.
