The Vancouver Canucks are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Canucks compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference along with Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes. The Vancouver Canucks have a rivalry with the Calgary Flames which dates all the way back to 1981 when the Calgary Flames joined the division. Their rivalry was considered one of the most intense in the early 90s when both teams were often battling against each other for the top spot of their league.
The Vancouver Canucks play their home games at the Rogers Arena in Downtown Vancouver, which opened in 1995. The team were established in 1945 and have been part of the PCHL and WHL before moving to the NHL. When the team moved to the NHL in 1970 they played their home games at the Pacific Coliseum which was their home for 25 years before moving to the Rogers Arena. The Rogers Arena has a capacity of 18,910 for its ice hockey matches and is also home to the NLL’s Vancouver Warriors. It was once the home for NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies, RHI’s Vancouver Voodoo, and NLL’s Vancouver Ravens, and is set to become the home for the OWL’s Vancouver Titans in 2020.
Rogers arena has been used to host many sporting events over the years including four games in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, World Figure Skating Championships in 2001, and was used for ice hockey matches in the Winter Olympics in 2010. There have also been UFC and WWE events held at the arena. The arena also has concerts performed here from the likes of Iron Maiden, Elton John and Post Malone. Most notably, in 2002, a riot started after Axl Rose failed to turn up for a Guns n’ Roses show.
